Our

STORY

Who are we?

Our names are Claus and Dorthe Jordening, we are husband and wife with two beautiful daughters and so far four grandchildren. We have been the proud owners of Atuagkat since 2005. We are not just a bookstore but also a place of comfort and "hygge".

A lot has happened since 2005. We started in our little blue shop, then moved to a temporary location until we were able to move in to Nuuk shopping center in 2012 where we also partnered with bog&ide. After a couple of years in the mall we choose to end our partnership and become independent once more, so we packed our shop and moved to a new location where we have settled in very nicely.

The story of Atuagkat

Atuagkat was founded by The Greenlandic Publishers on the 5th of may 1966. At that time The Greenlandic Publishers was a state institution under The Greenlandic Provincial Council. The aim of this council was to increase the citizens' knowledge and awareness of literature. The establishment of the bookstore, however, met various protests from the public as the common attitude was that The Greenlandic Provincial Council should not engage in private business.

In connection with the establishment of Atuagkat Bookstore Tthe Greenlandic Publishers was changed to an independent institution. The bookstore became Greenland's first private store and contributed to a weekly Greenlandic book published by The Greenlandic Publishers.

Atuagkat Bookstore played a vital role in the Greenlandic literature. And this is why the idea of a private bookstore became a successful business for the private institution - The Greenlandic Publishers.

Later on the bookstore was sold to the couple Inger Hauge and Steen Amandus. Inger was an educated bookseller and Steen ran his own office supply business. Atuagkat was named Atuagkat & Kontorteknik A/S. Due to huge success, this business became one of the largest bookstores in Denmark as well as the world's largest arctic bookstore.

At New Year 2000 the office supply division and the bookstore separated, and from that time Atuagkat Bookstore only sold books.
