Until the early 1900s, Man was completely dependent on the living resources in Greenland, and birds, mainly seabirds, constituted an important resource.

Birds still play a significant role in the traditional food in Greenland today, and two species are particularly important; the Common Eider and Brünnich's Guillemot, both of which are shot in huge numbers.
